A continental gauntlet has been thrown down, with the launch of the World Agriculture Forum Country Council signalling Kenya’s explicit ambition to position itself as Africa’s leading force in AI-driven and bioengineered agricultural innovation.
The launch, held under the theme “The Convergence of Intelligence: Strategic Investments in AI and Bioengineering for a Resilient Agricultural Future,” brought together senior government officials, global agriculture leaders, researchers, investors and agribusiness executives to examine how converging technologies can unlock productivity, resilience and inclusive growth across Kenya’s food systems and by extension, across the continent.
The urgency is not theoretical. Climate-driven floods and prolonged droughts are disrupting planting seasons. Trade barriers are constricting supply chains. A rapidly growing population is demanding more food, faster. Kenya’s agricultural sector is being squeezed from multiple directions simultaneously, and the WAF Kenya Country Council is being positioned as the mechanism to bridge the gap between policy ambition and on-farm reality, creating investment pipelines that pair digital intelligence with biological innovation at scale.
Principal Secretary in the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, Shaukat Abdulrazak, speaking on behalf of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, framed the moment with deliberate boldness. “As we formally launch the Kenya Country Council of the World Agriculture Forum, we are doing more than inaugurating another institution. We are declaring that Kenya is ready to lead the ‘Convergence Decade’. The future lies in the synergy between digital intelligence and biological intelligence. AI can tell a farmer when to plant but bioengineering gives that farmer the seed that will survive regardless of the season,” said Abdulrazak.
That framing of intelligence meeting biology captures a genuinely new frontier in African agricultural thinking. For decades, the continent’s food security conversation has been dominated by access with access to inputs, to markets and to finance. The WAF Kenya Country Council shifts the emphasis to capability of building the domestic research, investment and innovation infrastructure that allows African farmers to compete and adapt in a climate-stressed, technology-driven global food system.
ILRI Director General Professor Appolinaire Djikeng reinforced that the transformation required is systemic rather than incremental, calling for sustained cross-sector collaboration to move from pilot projects to continental-scale impact. The commercial and geopolitical stakes in Kenya are clear as the country establishes itself as the node through which AI-enabled precision agriculture and next-generation bioengineered seeds flow into African farming systems will not merely feed itself more effectively, it will shape how the continent feeds itself for a generation.
The WAF Country Council is, in that sense, as much a strategic positioning exercise as it is an agricultural initiative. Whether Kenya can convert that ambition into the investment pipelines, regulatory frameworks and on-farm adoption rates that make the “Convergence Decade” a reality is the test that now follows.
