Abattoirs under spotlight in Tanzania

Tanzania’s authorities have set measures for frequent abattoir inspections in Dodoma to ensure that meat is safe for human consumption.

Addressing media recently, Dr.Hezron Nonga, Director of Livestock Services said the development is to guarantee meat consumed is also of the highest quality as required by law.

“We have directed our experts to inspect slaughterhouses frequently and ensure the meat sold to consumers is of great value. In order to inspect unscrupulous business people, putting forward their business interests at the expense of people’s health, the ministry has brought on board security organs,” said Dr Nonga.

Dr. Nonga said his ministry wholly collaborates with authorities which include Tanzania Food and Drug Authority (TFDA).

The Director further mentioned that the ministry is equally working with security organs in order to bring to book persons selling meat illegally.

Dr. Nonga further alluded that legal action will be taken against perpetrators and that a directive was issued to Local Government Authorities (LGAs) to spearhead setup of modern abattoirs with legal requirements.
