In a significant stride towards fostering deeper regional integration and economic prosperity, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia and her Tanzanian counterpart, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, have renewed their commitment to bolstering economic cooperation. The leaders’ renewed pledge, made during Nandi-Ndaitwah’s recent regional tour, focuses sharply on agriculture, youth empowerment, and sustainable development, aiming to tackle the “bread and butter issues” facing their respective citizens.
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s tour, which included stops in Angola, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe, culminated in Dar es Salaam, where the two presidents underscored the urgency of moving beyond diplomatic pleasantries to robust economic collaboration. The modest current trade volume between Namibia and Tanzania, standing at US$7.5 million (N$138.75 million), was acknowledged by both leaders as woefully inadequate and ripe for significant improvement.
Key sectors earmarked for immediate mutual investment and enhanced cooperation include agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and the burgeoning blue economy. Beyond these, the leaders also highlighted mining, port management, and critical infrastructure development as vital areas for synergistic growth. Crucially, both presidents stressed the imperative of creating efficient transportation corridors to facilitate the seamless flow of goods and people, recognizing connectivity as the lifeblood of increased trade.
Agriculture: A Catalyst for Shared Prosperity
A significant portion of the bilateral discussions centered on agriculture, a sector Nandi-Ndaitwah enthusiastically described as a “critical enabler for national development and youth job creation.” Namibia, keen to unlock its agricultural potential, expressed a strong interest in emulating Tanzania’s successes in the field. Nandi-Ndaitwah specifically cited Tanzania’s “Building a Better Tomorrow for Youth Through Agriculture” program as a valuable blueprint from which Namibia could draw lessons to enhance its own food security and empower its burgeoning youth population.
The empowerment of youth in both nations emerged as a central theme, with the leaders emphasizing the need to construct youth-driven and sustainable value chains, aligning with the strategic priorities of Namibia’s 8th Administration.
In a proactive move to foster direct business linkages, Namibian enterprises have received an official invitation to participate in the upcoming Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair. This initiative is designed to expose Namibian products to the East African market and foster concrete business-to-business opportunities.
The high-level meeting concluded with a resolute commitment to translate political goodwill into tangible economic action. Both President Nandi-Ndaitwah and President Hassan firmly asserted that future cooperation must be “measurable, mutually beneficial, and people-centered,” signalling a new era of practical and impactful collaboration between the two Southern African nations. The challenge now lies in transforming these promising discussions into concrete projects that will uplift the livelihoods of ordinary citizens.
