Zambia and Regional Tourism Sector Eyes Impact as Visit Rwanda Secures Major Aston Villa Shirt Sponsorship

by Grace Kisembo

In a landmark move for African sports diplomacy that is drawing close attention across Southern and East Africa, including neighbouring trade partners like Zambia, Rwanda has secured one of global football’s most prominent marketing platforms. The state-backed brand Visit Rwanda was officially unveiled as the new Front-of-Shirt Partner, Exclusive Official Tourism Partner, and Official Coffee Partner of English Premier League club Aston Villa.

The multi-year agreement marks a major escalation in African nation-branding strategies. By taking over the premier front-of-shirt placement on Aston Villa’s match kit, Rwanda places its tourism and export sectors at the center of the world’s most-watched domestic football competition. The move is expected to serve as a benchmark for other regional economies, including Zambia and fellow East African Community (EAC) members, as African nations increasingly leverage global platforms to drive trade, foreign direct investment, and destination appeal.

The partnership was officially announced by Jean-Guy K. Afrika, Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), who described the deal as a cornerstone for the country’s next phase of economic outreach.

“A new chapter begins. Visit Rwanda is proud to partner with Aston Villa FC as the Club’s Front-of-Shirt Partner, Exclusive Official Tourism Partner, and Official Coffee Partner,” Afrika said. “This partnership provides a powerful way to bring Rwanda closer to millions of people around the world, inviting them to visit, invest, do business, and discover the energy and opportunity shaping our country.”

Expanding Beyond Tourism into Value-Added Exports

Unlike traditional destination advertising, the deal integrates commercial agricultural exports by naming Rwanda as Aston Villa’s Official Coffee Partner. The inclusion aims to build direct international demand for Rwandan specialty coffee among millions of European and global consumers, offering a blueprint for how resource- and agriculture-focused nations in the region such as Zambia with its rich agricultural and mining portfolio can attach high-value export marketing to major sporting deals.

Afrika highlighted that Rwanda’s broader macroeconomic performance including a 9.4% GDP growth rate in 2025 provides the necessary foundation to capitalize on Premier League visibility.

The deal has drawn widespread reaction across African business, tourism, and diplomatic circles, with analysts framing it as a case study for the entire continent. Foreign relations analyst Theobald Ngimbwa noted that neighboring nations across East and Southern Africa, including Zambia as it continues to expand its own international tourism and investment outreach, stand to learn key lessons from Rwanda’s aggressive branding playbook.

“This is country positioning at scale,” said Natalia Sabure, Honorary Consul of Ethiopia in Finland. “The campaign successfully combines messages around tourism, investment, and business into a simple but powerful global marketing platform.”

Investment lawyer Mohamed Aboshanab underscored the broader regional momentum, noting simply: “It’s time for Africa.”

With Aston Villa competing across both the English Premier League and European continental tournaments, the Visit Rwanda brand will receive hundreds of millions of impressions per matchday. For Rwanda, and the broader regional trade ecosystem watching its rise, the venture signals a shifting approach to economic diplomacy where sports marketing acts as a direct catalyst for trade, tourism, and capital inflows.
