The Cabinet Ministry of Ukraine declared that it would pay Ethiopia and Somalia back for the $11.4 million worth of wheat.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in his speech at the General Debate of the 77th session of the UN that despite all the challenges brought on by the war, Ukraine has decided to send humanitarian aid to Ethiopia and will send an additional quantity of Ukrainian wheat for Ethiopian citizens.
“Despite its own suffering in the face of Russia’s brutal invasion, Ukraine has donated 30,000 metric tons of grain through the World Food Program (WFP) to alleviate Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis and funded another 50,000 metric tons of grain for Ethiopia and Somalia,” Secretary Antony Blinken tweeted.
On 17 September, Ukraine’s infrastructure ministry said a ship carrying 30,000 metric tons of grain departed for Ethiopia from Odesa Oblast via the UN-backed grain corridor. “The vessel is headed for Ethiopia. According to UN estimates, Ethiopia is on the verge of a food crisis,” the ministry said in a statement.
In mid-August, “The Brave Commander” freight ship departed from the Ukrainian port of Yuzhne, east of Odesa, carrying 23,000 metric tons of grain to Ethiopia, which has already arrived in Ethiopia. “Brave Commander” is the first freight ship chartered by the UN to unblock food shipments stuck in Ukraine ports after Russia’s invasion.
President Zelenskyy told the UN session yesterday that Algeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, Libya, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Bangladesh, Israel, India, Iran, Yemen, Cyprus, China, Korea, Lebanon, Türkiye, Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Romania and France have already received Ukrainian agricultural products.
