In a landmark step toward climate-smart agriculture and sustainable rural livelihoods, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has officially launched two custom-bred mushroom strains tailored specifically for Kenyan growing conditions. Unveiled alongside a state-of-the-art, data-driven smart farm structure, the initiative represents a high-tech leap forward for smallholder farming in East Africa.
The new strains dubbed JAMBO101 and MAMBO101were developed by the South Korean agricultural biotechnology firm Mush& Co. Ltd using advanced breeding techniques to deliver robust climate resilience and high yields. Deposited on March 3, 2026, under the prestigious Budapest Treaty with the Korean Collection for Type Cultures (KCTC), the strains will now enter comprehensive pilot testing in Kenya through a strategic collaboration between JKUAT’s JHUB Africa, Mush& Co., and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
“The ultimate goal is to enable farmers to generate sustainable incomes using small-scale mushroom houses,” stated Jihyun Jung, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mush& Co. Ltd, highlighting the commercial potential for local growers.
Context-Aware Innovation Meets Local Infrastructure
What began as a foundational project in 2024 has grown into a vast multidisciplinary hub bridging crop science, engineering, software development, and market economics. Central to the project is a redesigned mushroom cultivation facility built with local pumice to boost thermal insulation while curbing the intensive water and power demands of standard setups.
“The goal is to move from continuous energy-heavy monitoring toward context-aware, optimized interventions,” explained Dr. Lawrence Nderu, Founder and Director of JHUB Africa, emphasizing the drive toward lean, efficient farm operations.
To put precision agriculture directly into farmers’ hands, the project merges Internet of Things (IoT) climate sensors with an intelligent, two-tier artificial intelligence system. High-resolution crop imagery and ambient sensor telemetry are processed via advanced AI models to spot stress and early disease indicators. This intelligence is then compressed into lightweight TinyML models that run offline on standard mobile devices, ensuring smallholders maintain real-time diagnostics even without internet connectivity.
In addition, the initiative is breaking down linguistic barriers through Lugaghen, a specialized AI model trained in indigenous Kenyan languages including Gikuyu, Kamba, and Luyia allowing farmers to receive instant agronomic guidance via local-language chatbot interactions.
Empowering the Next Generation of Agribusiness
Financed through KOICA’s Creative Technology Solution (CTS) Programme, the initiative places youth capacity-building at its core, engaging between 50 and 70 university students across engineering, computing, and business disciplines. The strategic framework focuses on building a full-spectrum value chain that spans cultivation, technical advisory services, and direct market integration.
“KOICA will continue to identify and bring innovative Deep Tech Korean enterprises to Kenya,” noted Wankyu Park, KOICA Kenya Country Director, praising the deployment as a key milestone for technology transfer.
Echoing this vision, JKUAT administrators highlighted how such cross-sector alliances prepare students for an evolving bio-economy Dr. Patrick Mbindyo, JKUAT Registrar for Research, Production and Extension, noted that university-industry synergy is vital as the institution shifts toward competency-based learning.
Looking beyond immediate crop production, researchers at JKUAT are already exploring long-term applications for fungi technology, including alternative plant-based proteins and eco-friendly biomaterials.
“This initiative creates concrete opportunities for our students to transition from academia into active innovators and entrepreneurs within the mushroom sector,” added Dr. John Kinyuru, JHUB Africa Co-founder and food scientist.
By pairing targeted biotechnology with accessible AI, the JKUAT-KOICA partnership provides a scalable blueprint for low-carbon, high-yield agriculture across East Africa.
