In a powerful display of national resolve, Ethiopia is once again painting its landscape green, with the ambitious Green Legacy Initiative serving as a vibrant testament to the nation’s unwavering commitment to prosperity and sustainable development.
At a recent tree-planting ceremony in the Koye Feche Sub-district, a joint venture with Sheger City, Minister of Agriculture Girma Amente eloquently articulated the profound impact of these nationwide greening efforts. Under the resonant motto, “Promoting Prosperity through Planting,” Ethiopia is not merely sowing seeds; it is cultivating a future.
This year’s drive is set to be monumental, with over 7.5 billion seedlings destined for Ethiopian soil. A remarkable 2.5 billion have already taken root, a testament to the meticulous groundwork laid across the country, including extensive land clearing and precision hole digging, all designed to ensure the thriving success of each tender plant.
Minister Amente underscored the multifaceted benefits of the Green Legacy Program, highlighting its pivotal role in bolstering food security, fortifying environmental protection, driving widespread reforestation, and, not least, enhancing the sheer aesthetic beauty of the Ethiopian landscape.
Echoing the minister’s sentiments, Deputy Mayor of Sheger City and Agriculture Cluster Coordinator Girma Hailu revealed the city’s significant contribution to this national endeavor, with 18.9 million seedlings earmarked for planting within Sheger’s burgeoning urban sprawl this year. Hailu passionately affirmed that the initiative is an indispensable step towards realizing the city’s vision of evolving into a greener, smarter, and more liveable urban hub.
